About the Event
Skeptics on the Fringe presents:
Caroline Rance, Author of The Quack Doctor - Snake Oil! Frauds and fakers from quackery's colourful history
They say there's nothing new under the sun, and many of the tactics used to sell miracle cures in the past are remarkably similar to the promotion of today's unproven remedies. Caroline Rance uses a wealth of historical advertising images to explore how patent medicine vendors of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries attracted customers, and how anti-quackery campaigners attempted to put a stop to their lucrative activities.
Caroline Rance runs The Quack Doctor website, which investigates the stories behind patent medicines and health fraud in history. Her book The Quack Doctor: Historical Remedies for All Your Ills was published in 2013 and her most recent publication is The History of Medicine in 100 Facts, which dispels some of the accepted myths about medicine's long past. She regularly gives talks about historical quackery, including a main stage appearance at QEDCon in 2017.
