Skeptics on the Fringe 2012 – Part 1: Joanna Bryson

Doctor Joanna Bryson delivered an intriguing talk about consciousness and whether or not robots can (or already do) experience it.

Steven Makin introduced her as one of the scientists involved in the creation of the first Lego robot, which was well-received by audience members in their 30’s, getting the discussion off to a good start.

Doctor Bryson raised important issues in how we define consciousness and whether or not these definitions can be applied to existing forms of artificial intelligence and robots, ultimately concluding that, yes, robots can, in fact, be conscious, and that some already are. Doctor Bryson’s talk was followed with an amicable Q&A session and she joined some of the audience members for drinks and further discussion in the Banshee Labyrinth afterwards.
