Day Out – Edinburgh’s Book Sculptures

Saturday 28 July 2012, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
At: Starbucks, 116-118 Cannongait, Edinburgh, ,

Edinburgh Book SculptureIn March 2011, an anonymous artist delighted Edinburgh and the literary world with a mystery. A series of unique sculptures, each crafted from old books, were subsequently discovered in quiet spots of various Edinburgh literary institutes. With each was a tag containing a recurring message:

“A gift in support of libraries, books, words, ideas”

Join us Saturday July 28th as we take a walk around Edinburgh’s Old Town hoping to get a peak at several of these curious donations, as well as taking half an hour to explore each location and discover its significance. We will meet 1:00pm at Cannongait Starbucks and begin our journey as follows:

  1. Scottish Poetry Library - The Poetree and The Cap & Gloves
  2. Scottish Storytelling Centre – The Hatching Dragon
  3. Writers Museum – The Jekyll & Hyde
  4. Central Lending Library – The Magnifying Glass and The Confessions
  5. National Library of Scotland – The Gramophone
  6. National Museum of Scotland – The Tyrannosaurus Rex

The National Museum of Scotland will close at 5:00, after which time we can head for dinner and a chat at the reasonably-priced Yocoko Noodle Bar on South Bridge, just a short distance from the museum.

Due to distance and the unlikelihood of their sculpture being on display, we will not be including the Filmhouse and Edinburgh Bookshop in our tour.
