Can Robots Be Conscious?

Can robots be conscious?  Are they already?  Why do the answers to these questions seem so important?

In this talk, Joanna Bryson starts with examining what we know about consciousness and behaviour, and how we’d build it.  She then moves on to a skeptical enquiry into our beliefs about the relationship between consciousness and ethics, and whose job it is to determine whether an artefact of human culture can itself be either responsible for its actions or a source of moral obligation.

Dr. Joanna J. Bryson holds two degrees each in Psychology (Chicago, Edinburgh) and AI (Edinburgh, MIT).  She has also worked for the financial industry (in the 1980s) and LEGO.  She currently leads the Intelligent Systems research group at the University of Bath.
