Prof. Francesca Stavrakopoulou – The invention of God and the Devil

It was inevitable that humans would invent God – and then the Devil. We’ll explore the origins and functions of God and Satan in the ancient religions of West Asia, and examine their tumultuous relationship, from biblical buddies to broken bromance.

Francesca Stavrakopoulou is a professor of the Bible and ancient religion – and an outspoken atheist. She began her academic career at Oxford University, where she read theology and religion, before specialising in biblical studies. Following her doctorate and post-doctoral research fellowships, she moved to the University of Exeter. Her work focuses on the religious and social realities of the biblical world, and their (mis)representation in the Bible and modern Western scholarship. She appears regularly on TV and radio to discuss religion, atheism, and history.
