Up until lately the gender binary has gone largely unchallenged as the dominant construct for classifying individuals within western societies.

But as questioning its value becomes more prevalent in popular discourse, is the time ripe to dismantle it?

Does the gender binary continue to serve any of us? If not, how can we encourage those who feel they benefit from it that it is time to move beyond the binary?

Having completed an LLB and Diploma in Legal Practice Nathan Gale joined the Scottish Transgender Alliance in January 2012 as the organisation’s Development Officer.

Nathan (who uses the gender neutral pronouns “they/them”) leads on legal and criminal justice issues, provides good practice advice to policy makers, and informs trans people of their rights. They were heavily involved in the Equal Marriage campaign and the development of the trans aspects of the resulting legislation. They are now leading on the organisation’s new campaign to reform gender recognition legislation.
